How to Store Medicines Safely at Home
Good storage helps protect medicines from damage and keeps them away from children. Start with the instructions on each product rather than applying one storage rule to everything.
Choose an appropriate location
Many medicines need a cool, dry place. Bathroom cabinets can expose products to heat and moisture from showers. Kitchen cupboards near sinks, stoves or hot appliances may also be unsuitable.
Ask a pharmacist about products with special storage requirements.
Keep the original container
Original packaging keeps the medicine’s identity, directions and expiration information together. It also makes storage instructions easier to check.
Keep medicines out of reach
Store medicines out of children’s sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet. Remember medicines carried in handbags, travel bags and visitors’ belongings.
Check for damage
Unexpected changes in color, smell or texture can indicate a problem. Tablets that become cracked or stick together also need attention. Consult a pharmacist before using a product that appears damaged.
Avoid extreme temperatures during travel
Do not leave medicines in a vehicle’s glove compartment. Ask how to transport products that require special conditions.
