How to Recognize an Unsafe Online Pharmacy

A professional-looking website does not prove that an online pharmacy is legitimate. Reviews, familiar packaging and licensing badges should not replace independent checks.

Check prescription requirements

For U.S. consumers, a website offering prescription medicines without a valid prescription is a warning sign. Legitimate pharmacies require appropriate prescribing documentation.

Verify the license independently

Check the pharmacy’s details directly with the relevant state board of pharmacy. The FDA also identifies a U.S. physical address, telephone number and access to a licensed pharmacist as important safeguards.

Watch for warning signs

Be cautious if a seller offers unusually low prices, provides unclear privacy protections or cannot connect you with a pharmacist.

Damaged packaging, missing expiration information or unexpected changes in a medicine’s appearance also warrant concern.

Understand why verification matters

Medicines from unsafe sources may contain the wrong ingredients, incorrect amounts or harmful substances. Poor storage can affect quality too. Appearance alone cannot establish safety or authenticity.

If you cannot verify a pharmacy, do not order from it. Outside the United States, consult your country’s pharmacy regulator.
