How to Dispose of Unused Medicines Safely
Unwanted or expired medicines need an appropriate disposal route. Leaving them accessible can increase the risk of accidental exposure or misuse.
Use a take-back service where possible
In the United States, authorized take-back services are the preferred option for most unused medicines. Some pharmacies offer collection kiosks or approved mail-back programs.
Check which items a service accepts before using it.
Read the disposal instructions
If take-back is unavailable, check the product’s labeling and current FDA guidance. Disposal methods depend on the medicine.
Do not routinely flush medicines
Flushing is reserved for medicines on the FDA’s flush list when a take-back option is not readily available. Do not assume it is suitable for every prescription product.
Follow household-disposal guidance carefully
For medicines suitable for household-trash disposal, FDA guidance describes mixing them with an undesirable material, such as used coffee grounds or cat litter, then sealing the mixture in a container before disposal.
Remove personal information from empty packaging.
Check medical supplies separately
Needles, syringes and other medical products may need different arrangements. Ask a pharmacist or local waste authority. Outside the United States, follow local requirements.
